What is Erythritol?
Erythritol is a naturally-derived sweetener that looks and tastes very much like sugar, yet has no calories. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, also known as a polyol, and is found naturally in small amounts in grapes, melons, mushrooms, and fermented foods such as wine, beer, cheese, and soy sauce.
How is Erythritol Made?
Erythritol is usually made from plant sugars. Sugar is mixed with water and then fermented with a natural culture into Erythritol.
It is then filtered, allowed to crystallize, and dried. The finished product is white granules or powder that resembles sugar. Erythritol has been used in Japan since 1990 in candies, chocolate, yogurt, fillings, jellies, jams, and beverages as a sugar substitute. No detectable GMO’s are present in the erythritol that Sinless Raw Food uses.
Erythritol does not affect blood sugar nor insulin levels and has a zero glycemic index and is therefore safe for diabetics, people on low carb diets, and all people seeking to reduce their sugar intake. Erythritol isn’t metabolized by oral bacteria, which means that it doesn’t contribute to tooth decay. Unlike other sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol, and maltitol, erythritol does not cause digestive upset because it is easily absorbed in the small intestine due to it's smaller molecular size in comparison to the other sugar alcohols in common usage.
